ChatGPT obtains information from the internet and this is prioritised over any previous data from which it previously learned. It gathers information in real-time, meaning that you always have answers based upon the most up-to-date information available.

There are some important things to know about the ways in which ChatGPT functions, the use of API keys and customisation. So let's break it down in detail before we begin having fun using it!
Throughout the three chapters concerned with this subject, we will describe the many functions you can use. To take advantage of these functions, you first press what we call the Chat Key. This is the Control Key and Grave Accent Key pressed together, then release them and type another letter on the keyboard.
You are already used to this concept. Ordinarily to access Leasey functions, you press the Grave Accent Key (which we call the Leasey Key), then another keystroke. This is exactly the same. For example, if you wish to move into Leasey's ChatGPT Menu settings, you press the Chat Key followed by M for Menu.
Leasey provides access to many functions offered by OpenAI. However, to use these facilities, you need an OpenAI API key.
An API key is like a digital password which allows Leasey to communicate with OpenAI services on your behalf.
You may already have a paid ChatGPT subscription for use in a web browser, in the ChatGPT desktop application or on your phone. A ChatGPT subscription does not include usage of the OpenAI API. ChatGPT subscriptions and API billing are entirely separate.
You may use the same OpenAI account and email address for both services, but you must set up API billing separately on the OpenAI Platform.
Ideally, you should set up and use your own OpenAI API key. This allows you to control your API account, monitor your usage and manage the amount you spend.
There is no charge merely for creating an API key. Charges are made when Leasey uses the key to send requests to OpenAI.
The amount charged depends on several factors, including:
For this reason, it is not possible to give a single reliable cost for each question or for a particular number of words.
For ordinary Leasey requests, each individual charge is normally small. However, processing long documents, requesting detailed responses or making frequent requests will use more credit.
You can review your API usage and remaining balance on the OpenAI Platform.
Before an API key can normally be used, you must add a payment method and activate billing for your OpenAI API account.
OpenAI generally uses prepaid billing for new API accounts. This means that you purchase credit in advance. The cost of requests made by Leasey is deducted from your available credit.
OpenAI may also offer an automatic recharge facility. If automatic recharge is enabled, additional credit can be purchased automatically when your balance falls below an amount you specify. Check this setting carefully before confirming your purchase.
Purchased API credit normally expires after one year and is non-refundable.
Follow these steps to set up API billing.
Step 1. Open the OpenAI Platform Home page:
Step 2. Sign in to your OpenAI account. Depending on how the account was created, you may be asked for a password, a temporary code sent by email, a passkey, or to continue with Google, Microsoft or Apple.
Step 3. After signing in, open the API Billing Overview page:

Step 4. Select the option to add payment details or set up billing. The precise wording of the button may change.
Step 5. Enter your payment card and billing information.
Step 6. Choose the amount of API credit you wish to purchase.
Step 7. Review the automatic recharge settings. If you do not want OpenAI to purchase additional credit automatically, make sure automatic recharge is turned off.
Step 8. Confirm the payment. It may take a few minutes before the new balance becomes available.
When you need to purchase additional credit later, return to the Billing Overview page and select the Add to balance button.
After setting up API billing, you can create an API key for Leasey.
Step 1. Open the OpenAI API Keys page:

Step 2. If OpenAI asks you to select a project, select the Default project. Most individual users do not need to create a separate project solely for Leasey.
Step 3. Select the Create new secret key button.
Step 4. Enter a descriptive name for the key, such as Leasey.
Step 5. If you are offered a choice of permissions, select All unless you have been given different instructions by Hartgen Consultancy.
Step 6. Select the button to create the secret key.
Step 7. Copy the complete API key immediately and store it somewhere safe. For security reasons, OpenAI will not display the complete key again after you close the window.
Creating an API key does not add credit to your account. Billing must also be active and sufficient credit must be available before the key can be used successfully.
If you lose the key, create a replacement and delete or revoke the lost key from the API Keys page.
Step 1. Press the Leasey Chat Key followed by M for Menu.
Step 2. Select Enter ChatGPT API Key from the list.
Step 3. Paste the OpenAI API key into the Edit Field.
Step 4. Press Enter.
Leasey will store the key so that you do not need to enter it whenever you use an OpenAI feature.

If Leasey reports that your API quota has been exceeded, check the following:
Remember that creating an API key by itself does not add credit or activate paid API usage.
If you believe that your API key has been exposed, return to the API Keys page and delete or revoke it. Create a replacement key and enter the replacement into Leasey.
The OpenAI sign-in process and website addresses have changed over time. Old sign-in links may report that your session has ended or is no longer valid.
If this happens, close the page and begin again from the OpenAI Platform Home page:
If the problem continues, try opening the OpenAI Platform in a new browser window or a private browsing window and sign in again.
If your account uses an educational or workplace email address, your organisation may require you to sign in through Microsoft, Google or another organisation-managed login system. Use the same sign-in method that was originally used to create the OpenAI account.
If you are unable to purchase your own API key—perhaps due to financial circumstances or difficulty navigating the setup process—we can provide you with an API key. Please think carefully prior to asking us for an API key. We are a small business and it will cost us financially when you use the service. If for example you are in employment, it would be reasonable for you to purchase your own API key.
The first time in any new JAWS session, Leasey will first check our server to confirm that your assigned API key exists before submitting your query to ChatGPT. This typically takes less than one second.
If an API key is significantly abused (for example, if thousands of queries are made in a single day), we reserve the right to remove the key without prior notice. This helps us protect the service for all users.
The provided API key can only be used within Leasey and cannot be exported or used in other products.
It is sometimes necessary for us to change the API key you have been assigned on our server. If this needs to occur, you will almost certainly receive a period of disruption where the key will not function. Service is always restored as soon as possible but it is important to realise this can occur.

While testing has proved that in most circumstances this does not occur, it could be in rare situations that Leasey could have difficulty communicating with the Hartgen Consultancy server. In such a situation, a specially encrypted API key can be sent to you by email. This is not the real API key but a special version which Leasey can decode. You can enter this into Leasey manually as directed above.

We will now explore some ways in which you can customise the Leasey ChatGPT interface. Before we do that, you need to understand a little about how the system works. In the next chapters, we will explore all of the options in detail. However, in summary, you press a keystroke, type a question, and ChatGPT returns the answer. It's as simple as that. It's what you do with that answer that we will be exploring later.
The first thing to decide is how you would like the responses to be delivered. There are two views: The HTML view and the plain text view. The HTML view is the default setting.
In order to choose which view you would like:
Step 1. Press the Chat Key then letter M to move into the ChatGPT Menu.
Step 2. Select either the option "The Results Viewer Will be Used for a Full HTML Experience", or, "The Virtual Viewer Will be Used for a Plain Text View."
Step 3. Press Enter on the appropriate option. The setting will be retained even if you restart the computer.
The HTML view has two distinct advantages:
Step 1. When the response from ChatGPT is delivered, it is displayed using the JAWS Results Viewer window. This means that the window stays open, even if you move to a different application. You can make notes on anything you have received and then move back to it at a later time.
The HTML view can contain headings for separation purposes, tables where appropriate and almost certainly links. The links on the page are there for a purpose: they allow you to press Enter on them if you wish so as to verify the sources from where ChatGPT obtained its information. Any AI tool can make mistakes and it may be reassuring to check the original sources. The entire response can be copied to the clipboard by pressing Alt+Control+Windows+C.
The Plain Text view has two distinct advantages:

When you press the Chat Key then M, as we have discovered, this moves into the ChatGPT Menu. This menu contains links to core sections of the ChatGPT interface you may wish to use. As you move through each option, you will hear the focused item followed by its shortcut key. For example, the first item is, "New Prompt, Chat Key then N." This means that in order to send a new prompt to ChatGPT, you can either press Enter on this menu item or, in future, press the Chat Key then N.
This menu serves two purposes: you can always access it in order to carry out common tasks if you cannot remember the shortcut keys. It is also a good method of learning the shortcut keys themselves.
